The public is invited to a groundbreaking for the new Ka‘u District Gym and Shelter at 9 a.m. Wednesday at the Ka‘u High and Pahala Elementary school campus.
Gov. Neil Abercrombie will be joined by Mayor Billy Kenoi, Department of Education officials and Ka‘u High School Principal Sharon Beck.
The 43,300-square-foot gym and shelter will expand athletic and recreational opportunities in the district. It will also serve as a destination for community events and as an emergency shelter during natural disasters.
Construction is scheduled to begin the week of Oct. 11 and take 18 months to complete.
Kealakehe group
meets Wednesday
The Kealakehe Community Association meets at 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Kealakehe Intermediate School cafeteria. The public is invited to attend the meet-and-eat activity at 6 p.m.
The agenda includes nomination of officers for the upcoming year, Neighborhood Watch recruitment, upcoming annual community conference, community police reports and residents sharing time.

Cancer support group meets Thursday
You’ll Never Walk Alone meets from 11 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. Thursday. Survivors and co-survivors are invited to attend the all-cancer support group’s free meetings held the first and third Thursdays of every month. Light refreshments are served.

House District 5 debate planned for Thursday
State House 5 candidates Denny Coffman and Dave Bateman will square off in a one-on-one debate in an effort to highlight policy and position differences between the two legislative hopefuls.
The event will be from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday at Konawaena Elementary School cafeteria. Former legislator Virginia Isbell will be the moderator as the two contenders debate issues including cost of living, energy, agriculture, the economy and education. Questions will also be taken from those in attendance.
“This is a departure from the candidate forums held so far that only allow candidates 90 seconds to talk about complex issues with no follow-up,” said event organizer Rick Thompson. “This will be in-depth with a lot of back and forth, including the candidates asking each other questions.”
The event is sponsored by the Grassroot Institute of Hawaii and the Kona Tea Party.
Cancer retreat
is Oct. 22 to 26
Karin Cooke, a cancer survivor and life coach, will guide a Retreat of Hope and Empowerment from Oct. 22 through 26 at the Kokolulu Farm in Hawi. She will share the Kokolulu Farm and Cancer Retreats in Hawaii philosophy that embraces all modalities of medicine in the treatment of cancer.

Hui Laulima
gathers Friday
West Hawaii Hui Laulima meets from 10:30 a.m. to noon Friday at the West Hawaii Community Health Center community meeting room.
Guests will include Shirley Soares, Cassandra Varron and Ashlynn Victorino.
Soares, a senior program specialist for the Economic Development Center, a program of Parents and Children Together, will provide information about the center’s job readiness and business start-up assistance programs.
Varron and Victorino, both youth specialists from Goodwill Industries, will talk about “Ola I Ka Hana,” a program that stresses the value of education and importance of work experience for Hawaii’s youth.
Additionally, the group will work to develop some strategies to identify community issues.

Waikoloa candidate forum set for Friday
The Waikoloa Community Leadership Council hosts a candidate forum from 6 to 8:30 p.m. Friday in the Waikoloa Elementary and Middle School dining room.
Mayoral candidates Billy Kenoi and Harry Kim and District 9 County Council candidates Margaret Wille and Sonny Shimaoka will be in Waikoloa Village to answer questions about issues vital to the community. Noa Lincoln of Lava 105 will serve as moderator. All are welcome.

Green Living Fair scheduled for Saturday
The third annual Green Living Fair is planned from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at One Island’s Sustainable Living Center in Honaunau.
The event features the tools and products that make living green empowering, enjoyable and cost saving, including electric vehicles, locally grown foods and solar-power equipment and appliances.
Creative green inventions — winners of the Sustainability Innovation Challenge Award — will be on display.
The event is free with an optional $18 lunch.
